US astronomers said Thursday they have discovered the first planet that is orbiting two Suns, much like the fictional home of Luke Skywalker featured in Star Wars.

Skywalker’s native planet of Tatooine was hot and desert-like, but this planet, called Kepler-16b, is a freezing cold world about the size of Saturn, orbiting two parent Suns in a near perfect circle about 200 light years away.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – EU regulators are still undecided whether Google dominates in Internet search and if it has abused rivals in breach of competition rules, the EU’s antitrust chief said on Friday.

The European Commission opened an investigation into Google in November last year after rivals, including Microsoft, accused the company of abusing its dominant position in the market for web search services.

“As part of our current investigation, we are trying to determine whether the company holds a dominant position in Internet search,” EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia told a competition conference in Florence.

Heidi Klum deemed most dangerous celeb in cyberspace

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Supermodel and TV host Heidi Klum was named on Thursday as the most dangerous celebrity in cyberspace, inviting malware and viruses to flourish on computers.

Internet security firm McAfee said searching for downloads and screensavers for the “Project Runaway” judge and former Victoria’s Secret model runs a nearly one in 10 chance of landing on a malicious website with spyware, spam, phishing and other viruses designed to steal personal information.

CNN talk show host Piers Morgan, also a judge on “America’s Got Talent” and a former British tabloid newspaper editor, was the most dangerous male celebrity in the survey, produced annually by McAfee.

McAfee said cyber criminals often used the name of popular celebrities to lure people to websites that are laden with malicious software.

It said singers and sports stars tended to be safer searches than movie stars and models. Cameron Diaz topped the cyberspace danger list in 2010, and was No. 2 this year.

“While slightly safer than last year, searching for top celebrities continues to generate risky results,” said Paula Greve, director of Web security research at McAfee.

Casey Anthony ordered to pay nearly $100,000 in costs

Sep 15, 2011 14:33 EDT

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) – Casey Anthony, the young Florida mother acquitted of killing her daughter, was ordered on Thursday to pay almost $100,000 to cover expenses incurred after she falsely claimed 2-year-old Caylee had been kidnapped.

Judge Belvin Perry ruled that Anthony must reimburse $97,676.98 in investigative costs incurred between July 15, 2008, when Anthony first told detectives that her daughter had been kidnapped by a nanny, and September 29, 2008, when detectives determined Caylee likely was dead rather than missing.

Anthony was charged with Caylee’s murder and four counts of lying to investigators. In a nationally televised trial this summer, Anthony was acquitted of the murder but found guilty of the lies.

Prosecutors sought $517,000, the cost several police agencies and the prosecutor’s office said was incurred as a result of her lies.

Mexico drug gangs menace web critics with murder

REUTERS

Reuters US Online Report Internet News

Sep 15, 2011 13:42 EDT

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – A Mexican drug gang this week issued a threat to websites that cover the drug war in a message placed near two mutilated bodies suspended from an overpass near the U.S. border.

A placard warning bloggers to keep quiet was found next to the bodies of a man and a woman hanging from a pedestrian walkway in the city of Nuevo Laredo on Tuesday, an official at the state prosecutor’s office said.

“Watch out, I’ve got my eye on you,” the placard said, according to photos from the scene, warning that the same would happen to all Internet trouble-makers. It was signed “Z,” a reference to the brutal Zetas drug gang, which operates in the area.

The victims, who have not been identified, were aged between 20 and 25 and were badly mutilated, said the official, who asked not to be named.

Two popular websites covering the Mexico drug war, Blog del Narco and Frontera al Rojo Vivo, were mentioned on the placard.

The Rojo Vivo site, managed by border newspaper El Norte, said all archived material had been cleared from the blog, removing information about contributors.

“From now on, we will only publish specific facts and information about border communities and not personal attacks,” read a notice on the site on Thursday.

Drug traffickers often target local media and try to suppress coverage. At least 42 local reporters have been killed over the past five years, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Many newspapers and other media have stopped publishing graphic photos of murder victims or the calling cards that drug gangs use to threaten rivals, the police or public.

About 42,000 people have died since President Felipe Calderon sent in the army to control drug gangs in late 2006.

Suddenly, liberal op-ed writers are trashing — even lampooning — Barack Obama as a one-term president (“one and done”). Centrist Democrats up for re-election in 2012 openly worry about inviting a kindred president into their districts, lest the supposed new pariah lose them votes.

Left-wing think tanks, environmentalists and academics vent their anger against Obama for supposedly being too soft on Republicans, and too ready to compromise with right-wingers. But what really caused the left-wing falling-out, less than three years after the hope-and-change crush on Barack Obama?

Casey Anthony dad says Caylee died of drug overdose

Alex Dobuzinskis

Reuters US Online Report Domestic News

Sep 14, 2011 20:12 EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The father of Casey Anthony said in a TV interview that aired on Wednesday he believes his daughter or someone with her drugged his 2-year-old granddaughter and caused the girl’s death.

Casey Anthony was acquitted in July at a trial in Florida of a charge that she murdered her daughter, Caylee, in a case that drew nationwide attention after Casey Anthony reported the toddler missing in 2008.

Caylee’s body was later discovered just outside of Orlando, Florida, in the woods less than a mile from the home of Anthony’s parents, George and Cindy.

Prosecutors at trial argued that Casey Anthony, 25, killed the girl by smothering her with duct tape and later buried her to hide the body, but defense attorneys suggested that Caylee died from an accidental drowning in a backyard swimming pool.

Despite her acquittal, Casey Anthony has been scorned by the public, and her parents — who at times have defended her — have not fared much better in popular opinion.

In an exclusive two-part interview with TV psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw, Casey Anthony’s mother, Cindy, said she believes the death was due to drowning, but her husband offered a different explanation.

“I believe that Casey or someone else that she was with, possibly gave too much to Caylee, she fell asleep and didn’t wake up. That’s what I feel,” George Anthony said on the “Dr. Phil” show, in an episode that aired on Wednesday.

McGraw asked George Anthony to elaborate on what substance he thinks could have been given to Caylee. George Anthony responded that it could have been a drug, such as the anti-anxiety medicine Xanax. He also mentioned chloroform, but seemed to discount that possibility.

George Anthony then, in response to a question from McGraw, explained what his daughter’s motivation could have been for seeing her daughter drugged and sedated.

“To go out and have a good time, to be with friends, to have this life that she didn’t have with Caylee,” George Anthony told McGraw.

The explanation from George Anthony, who also said that the pain of losing his granddaughter nearly pushed him to suicide, is similar to the view of some outside commentators on what may have happened to Caylee Anthony.

But Cindy Anthony expressed shock at her husband’s explanation, and said on “Dr. Phil” that it was the first time she had “heard that out of his mouth.”

The mother of Casey Anthony also said that, even though she believes her daughter had something to do with Caylee’s secret burial, she took her daughter’s acquittal as a sign from God that Caylee’s death was an “accident.”

“I believe that justice for Caylee was when her mother walked. I believe that in all my heart,” she said on the show.

Casey Anthony was found guilty of misdemeanor charges of lying to detectives during the investigation, after a jury acquitted her of a murder charge in the death of Caylee.

The first part of McGraw’s interview with Cindy and George Anthony aired on “Dr. Phil” on Tuesday.

Border Patrol finds weapons, rocket launcher near Rio Grande

Jared Taylor

Reuters US Online Report Domestic News

Sep 14, 2011 16:29 EDT

MCALLEN, Texas (Reuters) – U.S. Border Patrol agents have discovered a cache of several high-powered weapons along the Rio Grande river including a rocket launcher, assault rifles and plastic explosives, authorities said.

Agents found the weapons on Tuesday in a black bag along a quiet stretch of the Rio Grande near Fronton, a small community about 210 miles south of San Antonio. No arrests have been made.

“These deadly weapons could have had a devastating impact on communities on both sides of the border and to our agents and other law enforcement officers,” Rosendo Hinojosa, head of Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley sector, said in a statement.

Inside the bag were six assault rifles, a grenade launcher, a rocket launcher, 20 ammunition magazines for various-sized weapons and three packages of what appeared to be C-4 plastic explosives, a Border Patrol news release states.

Mexican drug gangs frequently rely on grenades and assault rifles in an escalating battle between rival drug smugglers and against law enforcement.

More than 42,000 people have died in Mexican drug wars since late 2006, when President Felipe Calderon declared war on drug traffickers.

Border Patrol agents found the weapons about 120 miles west of the hometown of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jaime Zapata, a Brownsville native fatally shot in broad daylight by suspected members of the Zetas drug cartel in Mexico in February.

His partner, Victor Avila, was wounded in the leg.

The seizure was also about 10 miles southeast from where U.S. citizen David Hartley was fatally shot while riding a personal watercraft on Falcon Lake in September 2010.

The Zetas have battled its former Gulf Cartel allies for control of lucrative drug smuggling routes across from deep South Texas since early 2010, when the two gangs split. Heriberto “The Executioner” Lazcano heads the Zetas, and is said to hold a large arsenal of grenades, automatic weapons and rocket launchers.

Bank of America to pay fired whistleblower $930,000

REUTERS

Reuters US Online Report Domestic News

Sep 14, 2011 18:04 EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Bank of America Corp must reinstate a Countrywide whistle-blower fired shortly after the two companies merged in 2008 and pay the employee $930,000, the Labor Department said on Wednesday.

The employee, whose name was not given, led internal investigations that found widespread fraud involving Countrywide employees. Reporting fraud to Countrywide’s Employee Relations Department led to retaliation, the employee told the Labor Department.

“It’s clear from our investigation that Bank of America used illegal retaliatory tactics against this employee,” Occupational Safety and Health Administration Assistant Secretary David Michaels said in a statement.

Bank of America disagreed. “We are disappointed with the ruling and plan to exercise our option to challenge the order,” spokeswoman Shirley Norton said by email.

“The bank’s actions to dismiss were solely based on issues with the employee’s management style and in no way related to the employee’s complaints and the allegations made in the complaint,” she said.

Bank of America has had a rash of problems related to its 2008 purchase of Countrywide Financial Corp, a major subprime lender accused of churning out loans to high-risk borrowers with little effort to check their incomes or ability to repay.

The Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank paid $2.5 billion to buy Countrywide, but writedowns and legal costs have pushed the estimated cost of that purchase to more than $30 billion.

The $930,000 payment to the dismissed employee includes back wages, compensatory damages and attorney fees, the Labor Department said.
